Foreign Policy
Foreign Policy is a
delicate
issue. There are plenty of things the US Congress can do to
end
the military action in Iraq (and Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, Yemen, etc); things they should be doing and are not
doing. One thing I would support, is bringing back the
National
Guard troops who are overseas. Federal control of the States'
National Guard has become so prevalent to be almost complete.
This must be reversed.
The
Government must return to Constitutional standards, and the Guard is supposed to be under State control. Federalization
of
the Guard is understandable in certain circumstances, but this is not
one of them. We should bring our troops home
immediately.
We have no right, moral or otherwise, to be there doing what we are
doing. The States must assert their rights, and bring home
their
troops.
If we have a Foreign Policy of Freedom, where we
respect
the sovereign rights of other nations, we will be far better off for
it. "Setting a good example is a far better way to spread
ideas
than through force of arms." (Paul). Our military globe-trotting is
incongruous with our standards of freedom and of Liberty.
Spreading republican and democratic ideals at the end of a gun is about as
hypocritical as one can be.
We should take the example of our Founders, and have no
entangling alliance, and we should trade and communicate with
everyone. How are we expected to resolve our differences if
we do
not communicate?
We should never go to war under the auspices of
the UN,
NATO, or any other organization. The USA should march in its
own
defense, take our marching orders from the Constitution, and never an international governing body.
